Frequently Asked Questions

Probably! It might even be free there. More and more often lately I'm hearing that banks are requiring you to be a member there, or that they won't notarize documents they aren't involved with otherwise. But what got me into this business is the elderly and disabled folks who can't leave their homes to do business, or it's just too difficult and exhausting when there's another option. As much as I believe everyone deserves to be paid a living wage for their labor, I also try to ensure that my pricing is considering everyone who has limited access to these kinds of essential services. That can be a difficult balance so if you're still finding yourself struggling to afford the service you need, please reach out. More than likely we can come up with something that works for both of us.

We can meet you anywhere. Work, home, hospital room, rehabilitation center, library parking lot, you name it. Bedside weddings and bedside notarizations are my specialty.

For notary appointments:
-
State or Federal government-issued (US-only for online notarizations; foreign IDs are just fine for in-person)
-
Not issued by a county or city (ex: CPL, city of Detroit)
-
Unexpired
-
Photo
-
Signature
-
Must be physically present (a photo will not work)
If you do not have a photo ID matching the criteria above, please call me before your appointment. We may be able to use what's called a "credible witness" which is someone you and I both already know, who is willing to vouch for your identity.
-
For details on the types of ID accepted, check out this article from the Michigan Notary Association. If you're not sure whether your ID can be accepted, give me a call and we can figure it out together before we set an appointment.

For wedding appointments:
The rules for ID are a little less strict. Passports can be expired up to 5 years, state ID expired up to 3 years, and city/county IDs are accepted.

Yes I do! Some notaries don't, and that can cause problems getting the notarizations accepted out of state and by some companies, even though by Michigan law it's not required (yet). I do have an embosser, and it is NOT an extra fee to have it included in your notarization. If you've had a document rejected by the receiving party due to a lack of embosser and the original notary cannot resolve the issue, please let me know when you make the appointment.

That's okay! Whether you need a witness for your power of attorney, wedding ceremony, or something else, Just let me know when you make the appointment and I'll pull some folks from my witness pool. Witness services start at $30.

This Michigan-focused article about Powers of Attorney has some details about witnesses for those specific documents. It gives some specifics about who can be a witness on a POA, as does the Uniform Power of Attorney Act, but those do not apply to all documents. For example a Will in Michigan has looser requirements for witnesses.
As a rule witnesses just have to be over the age of 18. Best practice is to use the POA requirements for all witnesses – someone who:
-
is not related to the signer (by blood, adoption, or marriage),
-
is not named in the document, and
-
does not benefit from the person signing the document.
There's also a strong preference for those witnesses to be reachable in case they ever need to testify in court about the signing, which is why you may see notaries record the witness as a signer even though we aren't necessarily notarizing their signature.

In Person: $10 per notarization, plus a travel fee we will agree on before the appointment.

Section 33 of the Michigan Law of Notarial Acts allows a notary to sign on behalf of someone who is mentally conscious and consenting, physically unable to make their own mark or signature, and who instructs the notary they would like this accommodation. So, yes, but you have to ask for it.
